Winery Artner - 2465 Höflein
Extremely dense and complex on the nose, dried pears and maraschino, pepper, allspice and cloves, dried olives, noble wood, gentle herbal boost, showing depth; rich and ripe on the palate, very fine red berries, present, elegant acidity, moderate wood, ripe tannins, annoying and substantial with good length, convincing.

The Ried lies on a back, which was formed from lime-poor to lime-free, gravel from an old Danube course and runs flat towards Höflein. The gravel lies on clayey-sandy, subordinate gravel-bearing deposits of the Miocene and is overlaid by loess towards the northwest. The Ried is the closest to the Danube and benefits from the strong cooling during the night. The name can be traced back to the Danube gravel that dominates here, which stores the warmth of the day, but also brings a barren structure to the wines.

Tasting notes from Jancis Robinson:
Deep cherry red with smudgy rim. Toasty-oak aroma along with spicy black fruit and a definite herbal/stemmy note. Dry, savoury, rocky finesse on the palate. The freshness is as much in the tannins as in the acidity, neither of which are lacking. Elegant, even in youth. A lightly charry aftertaste. Long and promising. Drink 2023 – 2030 (Jg 2018, 17+/20 - JancisRobinson.com)
